Carrick’s backroom staff praised by United insider – ‘Really impressed’

Michael Carrick has made an impressive impact at Old Trafford since his appointment as Man Utd interim boss.

Manchester United defender Noussair Mazraoui has been “really impressed” with Michael Carrick and his backroom staff. Carrick was appointed in January and led the team to seven games unbeaten in the Premier League.

Carrick suffered his first defeat since his appointment against Newcastle earlier in the week, but the former midfielder has won 19 points from a possible 24, guiding United to third in the table.

Carrick’s coaching staff have made an impact. Steve Holland joined to work as Carrick’s assistant, while Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and Binnion have worked as first-team coaches. Sources who have observed training sessions have described the strong chemistry among the backroom staff.

Speaking to club media, Mazraoui said: “I was not there for the first period because of AFCON, but, since I’m back, I’m really liking it a lot. They are very communicative, really clear in what they want to do.

“He has a big history at the club so he knows the club really, really well and you see and you feel that in this type of coaching and the words he’s saying to us in his meetings. I’m really impressed.”

When asked about Woodgate, Mazraoui said: “He’s really positive. He’s really, really clear also. Like the whole staff know what they want and they’re telling us. They are really clear and really positive, in a way which you really understand. So yes, it’s really, really good to work with them.”

Mazraoui played alongside Evans, who is now coaching at Carrington. “Yeah, that’s funny. That change, especially when I arrived, I knew him as my team-mate, and I have a quite good relationship with Jonny,” he said.

“So, yeah, I spoke a lot with him as a team-mate, but I already saw him… like because of his age, the respect was really, really high. So, basically, nothing really changed.”

Mazraoui continued: “You really see that they know the club, really feel the value of the club, because they have a great history here. They won big prizes, so they know how it is in the good times, in the bad times.

“And you just see and feel that, and I think we also show that through these last games, of course. That’s not by luck or anything, that’s more quality and their understanding of the club rather than anything else.”

Carrick picked up the Premier League’s manager of the month award for January, but when the accolade was announced, he said: “Let’s be honest, it’s not just about me really. It’s about everyone, you know: it’s about the staff, the coaching staff, the backroom staff, the players definitely.”
