Senne Lammens slams Man United display vs Newcastle – ‘Nowhere near good enough’

Man Utd suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Newcastle in the Premier League after a late goal from Will Osula.

Senne Lammens claimed Manchester United were “nowhere near good enough” against Newcastle on Wednesday night. Newcastle went down to 10 men in the first half, but the Magpies drew first blood through Anthony Gordon, who converted a penalty after a foul in the box from Bruno Fernandes.

Casemiro produced an almost immediate response at the Gallowgate after a free-kick from Fernandes, but United did not capitalise on their extra man advantage in the second half.

That opened the door for a dramatic ending, with Will Osula scoring in the final minute of the game to secure three points for Newcastle. The result meant Michael Carrick suffered the first defeat of his interim tenure.

Speaking after the final whistle, Lammens told TNT Sports: “That is always a bad feeling to lose, just in general, today was not our day. It was nowhere near good enough. We scored our goal just before half-time and it was really important to give us a good feeling going into half-time.

“When we step out on the pitch for the second half it needs to be better, I think our mentality needs to be better. In every aspect it was not our game today. I’m not sure what we were lacking. Every team has those games, but you can’t put it like that, you always have to perform, especially here.

“Heading into half-time we had a pretty good feeling because we scored and playing against 10 men you want to finish it off, we couldn’t get our rhythm going and we need to learn a lot from this.”

Speaking about the need to respond, Lammens said: “I mean look, we have to learn a lot from today but we have to look through it. Everyone has an off day, we had a collective off day which you can’t really do at a place like this. We need to go back to the basics of before.

“Hopefully this is just a one-off, we can learn from this, get the momentum again and get back to winning.”
