Holland College has appointed Natalie Mitton as its next president and CEO.

In a news release Wednesday, the college’s board of governors said Mitton will take over the role July 1.

She will be the first woman to lead the P.E.I. post-secondary institution and the seventh president and CEO in the college’s history. Mitton succeeds Sandy MacDonald, who is retiring.

Board chair Jessie Inman said the appointment follows a national search led by a college committee, with support from an external firm.

“Throughout her career, Natalie has demonstrated exceptional leadership, vision, and a deep commitment to student success and community impact,” Inman was quoted as saying in the release.

“Her strategic mindset and collaborative approach will serve the college well as we continue to grow, innovate, and strengthen our role across Prince Edward Island and beyond.”

According to the release, Mitton brings more than 20 years of leadership experience in post-secondary education, public service and business.

She previously served as vice-president of academic and applied research at Holland College, where she oversaw more than 60 post-secondary programs, educational joint venture programs, adult and community education, applied research and major innovation centres such as Canada’s Smartest Kitchen and the Business Analytics Centre.

Mitton has also worked with the P.E.I. government as deputy minister in both the Department of Workforce, Advanced Learning and Population, as well as the Department of Education and Early Years.
