Some schools are closed or delaying opening on Wednesday as a messy winter storm makes its way across Nova Scotia.

All schools in the Chignecto-Central Regional Centre for Education, Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education, Strait Regional Centre for Education and Tri-County Regional Centre for Education are closed today.

Schools in Halifax Regional Centre for Education and Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education are delaying opening by two hours.

In South Shore Regional Centre for Education, schools in Lunenburg County will delay opening two hours and have backup road closure plans in place. Schools in Queens County will open at regular hours, but have backup road closure plans in place.

As well, schools in Conseil scolaire acadien provincial are closed or delaying opening.

CBC meteoroligst Ryan Snoddon said the storm was expected to bring five to 15 centimetres of snow Tuesday night into Wednesday morning — with the highest amounts most likely for inland areas from eastern parts of the Valley across to Cape Breton.

Snow was expected to mix with rain across southwestern Nova Scotia from Digby and Yarmouth across to Lunenburg, and also possibly up into the Halifax area for a brief time Wednesday morning, Snoddon said.

He noted that Wednesday afternoon will see plenty of melting snow as temperatures climb into the mid single digits with some sunshine breaking through.

Many provincial roads were covered or partially covered with snow Tuesday morning, according to the Nova Scotia 511 map.
