One person remains unaccounted for after a fire at a home in Winnipeg’s Lord Roberts neighbourhood overnight on Saturday, the city says.

Firefighters responded to a fire at a house in the 600 block of Nassau Street South, between Brandon and Arnold avenues, just after 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, the city said in a Sunday news release.

There was heavy smoke and flames coming from the home when they got there. Firefighters entered the home to attack the blaze from the inside, but worsening conditions forced them to shift to an external attack using an aerial ladder and hose lines.

The fire was declared under control just before 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, the city said.

No injuries have been reported, according to the release, but one individual remains unaccounted for. Firefighters and police remained at the scene on Sunday to search the structure and continue investigating the fire.

The house sustained extensive smoke, fire and water damages and is believed to be a total loss, the city said. Damage estimates are not available.

The fire comes just months after a separate blaze gutted a home in the 700 block of Nassau Street South. That fire left a man in his 40s dead in late December.
