Pakistan edged out Sri Lanka narrowly by five runs in the 50th match of the 2026 T20 World Cup on Saturday (February 28) at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. However, it was not sufficient as Pakistan got eliminated from the tournament due to a poor net run rate. England and New Zealand advanced to the semi-finals from Group B ahead of Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

After being asked to bat first in the must-win game, Men in Green notched up a daunting total of 212/8 in 20 overs. Sahibzada Farhan continued his brilliant form and smashed a magnificent century to set up a platform for his side. Fakhar Zaman (84) supported him well with a blazing knock in the top order. Dilshan Madushanka scalped three wickets for Sri Lanka in the bowling department.

Dasun Shanaka (76*) and Pavan Rathnayake (58) then helped Sri Lanka fight valiantly in the steep chase, but could not get them over the line. Mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed (3/23) starred for Pakistan with the ball.

At the post-match presentation, Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka reflected on the narrow loss and said:

“It was a close game, I could have finished it. Unfortunate, well bowled to Shaheen. (Speaking on the whole campaign) It has been a tough campaign for us, we had few injures, disappointed the crowd, I want to say sorry to the crowd. Unfortunately we fell down because of the injuries or otherwise we could have made it to the semis.”

He continued:

“In the future, if there are no injuries, this team will do great in good tracks. Absolutely, missing two key bowlers who would have played if they were here. It was a big loss in terms of this World Cup, we need our players to be here. Hopefully they can return soon and do good for Sri Lankan cricket.”
