Countryside walk that connects two quaint villages with pubs along the way
This easy walk will take you along the River Cam and past a couple of cosy pubs
Cambridgeshire has plenty of green spaces to enjoy the fresh air in and great walking trails to follow to see even more of the county. If you are looking for a fairly easy walk with many pubs on the way to stop off at, you might want to try this walk that takes you to two different Cambridgeshire villages.
This walk starts in Fen Ditton and takes you along the River Cam and down to the village of Horningsea. The circular route takes around an hour to complete and is mainly on flat land.
The walk starts on Church Street right next to the King’s Head pub and will take you along the road until you reach the Fen Ditton Recreation Ground. You walk through the field parallel to the village until you reach Field Lane where you turn left and then right at First Post Corner.
You then walk alongside the River Cam going past the Red House and Poplar Hall before going under the A14. When you reach Baits Bite Lock, you turn right and walk all the way down the path to Horningsea Road.
To reach the centre of the village, you can follow Horningsea Road until you reach the high street. In the village, you can find the Crown and Punchbowl, a 17th century boutique inn with many traditional features such as brick fireplaces and timber beams.
The pub could be a good place to stop off and enjoy a meal part way through your walk. The pub’s menu regularly changes but features lots of classic British dishes such as sausage and mash, fish and chips, and a pie of the day along with a “unique” wine list.
To return to Fen Ditton, you can walk back down Horningsea Road and turn right onto Biggin Lane. You can then walk through the field towards the A14 and the path that runs along the River Cam. From there, you go back the exact same way you came from.
To finish your trip, you could head back into the King’s Head for a final pint.
