A Nova Scotia government investigation into the death of a Walmart employee whose body was found in a walk-in bakery oven has determined the machine was in good working order.

The province’s Labour Department says its workplace safety investigation also found there were no safety violations that could have contributed to the 19-year-old woman’s death at the Halifax store in October 2024.

As for the type of oven involved, the department found there were no broader safety concerns associated with that particular model.

A police investigation that concluded in November 2024 determined the woman’s death was not suspicious and there was no evidence of foul play.

The woman was identified by the Maritime Sikh Society as Gursimran Kaur, who was originally from India and had immigrated to Canada with her mother, who also worked at the big box store.

At the time, a police spokesperson said investigators had reviewed video footage, conducted several interviews and determined no one else was involved in the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
