“Worst contract in sports ever” “$100 million for 22 starts”: NFL fans react as Falcons make decision on Kirk Cousins’ future
Kirk Cousins has made a career out of cashing enormous checks. However, when Atlanta’s front office handed him one of the biggest in March 2024, fans questioned who got played.
The Falcons announced on Tuesday that they’re cutting Cousins loose when the new league year starts on March 11. Atlanta general manager Ian Cunningham broke the news at the NFL scouting combine, confirming what many already saw coming. The reaction online was brutal, mostly aimed at the franchise for signing off on the deal.

“How Kirk Cousins is feeling after getting $100 million for 22 starts” a fan commented.
“$35M dead cap is CRAZY. That’s not pivoting, that’s financially cartwheeling,” another fan wrote.
“Generational wealth moves this guy has made,” one fan tweeted.
“When is Kirk’s agent eligible for the HOF? Should be first ballot unanimous selection,” another fan tweeted.
“Good deal for Kirk… not sure it was a good deal for Atlanta,” wrote a fan said.
Cousins arrived in Atlanta on a four-year, $180 million contract. The two sides restructured in on Jan. 7; however, it wasn’t enough to save the relationship. The Falcons would still be hit by $35 million in dead cap money on his way out. Cousins only started 22 games for the team.

What’s next for Atlanta at quarterback after Kirk Cousins?

Michael Penix Jr. tore his ACL in November, and his return timeline is the biggest variable hanging over the franchise. Atlanta general manager Ian Cunningham said on Tuesday that the quarterback is on track and the team expects him to be ready for Week 1.
However, Falcons president Matt Ryan hasn’t locked Penix in as the unquestioned starter. The hesitation has kept speculation alive about what they might do next at the position. New Atlanta coach Kevin Stefanski, who coached Kirk Cousins in Minnesota, begins his tenure without a familiar face under center.
