‘See the similarities’ – Carrick makes glowing Lammens comparison at Man United
Senne Lammens is having a brilliant first season at Man Utd and he was outstanding in the win at Everton on Monday night.
Michael Carrick praised the calmness that Senne Lammens is bringing to Manchester United and said he can see similarities with the club’s former No.1 Edwin van der Sar.
Lammens delivered another superb display as United produced a defensive rearguard to beat Everton 1-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. The 23-year-old made a couple of excellent saves, including a stunning stop from Michael Keane, and was unflappable as the Toffees piled on the pressure.
United spent £18million to sign Lammens from Royal Antwerp in the summer and he is proving his worth in his first season at the club. Van der Sar praised his performances recently and Carrick admits he can see why the Belgian is being compared to the iconic Dutch goalkeeper, who made 266 appearances for the club.

“I definitely see the similarities, without comparing them. I don’t want to be comparing them because I don’t think it’s fair to Senne. But there’s definitely similarities,” said Carrick.
“For me, he’s a goalkeeper to be reliable, be trustworthy. Instead of creating chaos, you want him to take the chaos away and calm things down. I think Senne is that. He’s quite quiet at times and unassuming, but he’s got a real steel.
“How he’s gone about it at the moment is with calmness, with composure. I think it does help those in front of him an awful lot.”
All four of United’s summer signings played their part in a vital win on Merseyside, but Lammens’ performances this season are a major success story for the club’s recruitment policy.
He was an under-the-radar signing, and United pursued Lammens ahead of the more experienced and Premier League-proven Emiliano Martinez, with goalkeeping scout Tony Coton pushing hard for Lammens.

His character also shows that United are getting it right with signings, in terms of their ability to cope in the Old Trafford pressure cooker.
“In some ways, yeah, I think it’s difficult for me to talk about the past when I’ve not been here, but certainly the boys at the moment who have come in recently are all playing a huge part for us, which is ideal,” said Carrick. “A major part of it is the character and the personality, and that is a major attribute to have, especially playing here, so Senne kind of.
“The jump that he’s had is a big jump, no disrespect. It’s a huge jump for the one he made and to take it like he has done and just get on with things speaks volumes of his personality, and he’s able to just deal with the environment and play at that level.
“Listen, that was a tough place, that last 15 minutes, the amount of crosses and corners and things that he had to deal with and a couple of shots that he just catches and takes the sting out of it. So to be able to do that in such a manner is obviously pleasing for us.”
