Police say two recent shootings in northeast Calgary are believed to be connected to extortion targeting the South Asian community in the city.

Police said the first shooting took place Sunday at around 2:45 a.m. in the 8400 block of Saddleridge Drive N.E., with two people firing shots into a home before fleeing in a white sedan.

On Monday at approximately 12:10 a.m., police said one person fired shots into a home in the 300 block of Savanna Park N.E.

No one was injured in either shooting, and it’s unclear whether the shooters in either case were connected, police said.

Police said 28 extortion-related incidents have been reported in the city since the beginning of 2025. Of those, 13 were shootings.

“We should all be concerned whenever there’s gunfire in the streets,” Calgary Police Service deputy chief Asif Rashid told reporters at a Monday briefing.

He said people in the affected communities could expect to see an increased police presence in the area “during the times of days that the communities are most vulnerable.”

“Many of these incidents are happening in the evening and overnight hours. Many homes are occupied and so that causes grave concern for the Calgary Police Service, hence the proactive overt patrols and response that we’ve seen in the last few weeks,” he said.
