What was Donald Trump’s hockey tweet? POTUS’ controversial post goes viral after USA wins gold at 2026 Winter Olympics
Team USA beat Canada in OT to win the men’s ice hockey gold medal in the 2026 Winter Olympics. As part of the celebration, early Monday morning US President Donald Trump shared an eyebrow-raising AI-generated video on Truth social showing himself as the star player for Team USA.
The almost minute-long clip created by X’s chatbot Grok, depicted Trump wearing his signature blue suit and red tie while dominating Canadian players on the ice. Set to Survivor’s iconic anthem “Eye of the Tiger,” the footage showed a noticeably younger-looking version of the president scoring goals, delivering body checks and even dropped his gloves to pummel a Canadian opponent before being sent to the penalty box.
The video featured a fictional announcer exclaiming “What a play by Trump!” as the AI-generated president weaved through defenders and ultimately scored what appeared to be the game-winning goal, followed by enthusiastic hugs from his American teammates.
The AI video post came as a direct response to former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s 2025 social media taunt after Canada defeated the United States in the Four Nations Face-Off tournament. Trudeau had declared “You can’t take our country – and you can’t take our game” at a time when Trump was threatening tariffs and openly suggesting Canada become America’s 51st state.
The White House had already trolled Trudeau earlier by reposting his old comment alongside an image of a bald eagle digging its talons into what appeared to be a Canadian goose.
Donald Trump took an apparent jibe at US women’s hockey team
The viral AI video wasn’t Trump’s only controversial moment following the gold medal victory. During a congratulatory phone call to the men’s team immediately after their overtime triumph, Trump made comments that have drawn backlash across social media platforms.
During the celebratory call at Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, Trump told the players:
“I must tell you, we’re gonna have to bring the women’s team, you do know that. I do believe I probably would be impeached.”
The remark drew raucous laughter from the men’s locker room with the entire team joining in on what critics are calling a dismissive jab at their female counterparts.
The comment is particularly contentious given that the US women’s team achieved an identical 2-1 overtime victory over Canada just three days earlier on Thursday. Captain Hilary Knight forced overtime with a clutch goal in the final minutes before Megan Keller scored the golden goal 4:07 into the extra period. Knight’s heroics were historic marking her 15th career Olympic goal and making her the all-time leading scorer in US Olympic women’s hockey history.
