Washington Spirit headline new ESPN series ‘NWSL: The Final Third’

Trinity Rodman and the Washington Spirit will be featured in a new ESPN documentary series, “NWSL: The Final Third.” The three-episode series, which debuts online on Wednesday, features footage from throughout the Spirit’s 2025 campaign.

The show also followed Angel City FC and the Kansas City Current as the three franchises navigated last year’s hotly contested NWSL season, which ended with the Spirit falling to rivals Gotham FC in the championship.

The series follows Spirit players Trinity Rodman, Esme Morgan and Hal Hershfelt. Rodman, who became the highest-paid female soccer player in the world this offseason, led the group as she rehabbed from a nagging back injury.

“The three teams we embedded with were navigating very different realities as the 2025 regular season concluded,” Marie Margolus, a director on the series, said in a news release. “The drama that unfolded was incredible to witness.”

The Current broke the NWSL record for regular-season points, but lost in the first round of the playoffs to Gotham FC, who were the No. 8 seed. Angel City, despite boasting big-name backers and the second-highest attendance in the league, finished the season near the bottom of the table.

“I hope viewers come away feeling inspired by the intensity of the competition on the pitch — but most of all, connected to the players who shoulder the pressure and live with the consequences of every result off of it,” Margolus said.

The series will air on ESPN2 and Disney+ on March 2, a week after its streaming debut on the ESPN app.

The NWSL season kicks off on March 13 when the Spirit host the Portland Thorns.
