Northwest Territories RCMP say they have arrested a Hay River teen and seized a number of firearms after he allegedly posted threatening messages on social media.

Officers got a report of a social media post showing a Hay River youth holding a firearm with a “threatening caption related to an upcoming school sporting event,” RCMP said in a news release.

Police identified the youth as a 15-year-old Hay River resident and student at Diamond Jenness Secondary School on Thursday, according to the Friday release.

A search warrant at the suspect’s house yielded five firearms and an airgun, the news release said.

Police say the teen faces charges relating to uttering threats and firearms.

The release says he was arrested, and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date. He is not currently in custody.

Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
