A community drug alert has been issued in Waterloo region after 35 suspected drug overdoses and one suspected drug-related death since Saturday.

Public health’s Overdose Monitoring Alert and Response System said fentanyl samples being tested through Sanguen’s Drug Checking program found other drugs like potent sedatives, veterinary tranquilizers and depressants.

These drugs increase risk of overdose,” the alert warned. “Some people are reporting memory loss, confusion, and being very sleepy (sedation) after using drugs.”

The alert is warning people who use drugs should take note of the colour and be extra cautious if it’s yellow, dark orange or dark blue.

The alert said naloxone cannot stop the effects of non-opioid drugs, but it should still be given when an overdose is suspected.
